When to book fall gutter cleaning in Northville

The fall gutter cleaning that lasts comes after the oaks finish and before the first hard freeze. Here's how to time it in Northville and what the visit covers.

Book fall gutter cleaning in Northville for the gap between the oaks' fall drop and the first freeze that holds. In a typical year, that gap falls in the second half of November. If you book in October, we'll schedule the visit for after the trees over your roof are bare. The local detail for the city and the township is on our Northville gutter cleaning page.

Two dates set the fall window

The first date is when the last leaves come down. Maples go first. MSU Extension puts the end of fall color in southeast Michigan in late October, and Northville's maples drop through October along with it.

Oaks are the holdouts. Their leaves turn late and hang on for weeks after the maples are bare, and some keep dropping past Thanksgiving. University of Illinois Extension explains the habit: in oaks, the layer of cells that cuts a leaf loose forms late or only partway, so some leaves stay on the branch into winter and fall in late winter or early spring. That's why brown oak leaves can turn up in a gutter in March.

The second date is the first hard freeze that holds. Once the water in a gutter freezes solid, nothing drains until a thaw, and a frozen downspout stays plugged until spring. We clean gutters from April through November for that reason.

The fall visit fits between those two dates. With maples and no oaks overhead, early November works. With oaks over the roof, it pays to wait.

Why an early cleaning fills back up

An early October cleaning catches the maples. Then the oaks drop, and the gutter goes into winter full again. The visit happened, and by January the gutter looks like it never did.

Wet fall leaves don't sit loose in a trough. They settle into a flat mat at the bottom, with seed pods and shingle grit packed in. That mat holds water. It also works its way toward the outlet and jams in the first bend of the downspout, so the gutter can look clear from the driveway while the outlet is shut.

Then winter goes to work on it. The water held in the mat freezes, and the weight of ice and wet leaves pulls on the hangers. Snow melting off the roof runs into a trough that is already full and refreezes at the cold edge.

MSU Extension traces ice dams to heat building up in the attic, from thin insulation or poor ventilation, and that's where the lasting fix is. A packed gutter makes a dam worse. It gives the ice a base to build on at the roof edge, and it holds meltwater against the shingles. Clean gutters won't stop ice dams by themselves. A gutter that goes into the freeze empty takes away one of the things that feeds them.

Northville trees, in the city and the township

Northville has two kinds of gutter job. The City of Northville has older houses with shallow eaves and smaller gutters, on streets lined with mature oak and maple. Houses beside Maybury State Park or along the Hines Park corridor collect more leaves than a subdivision street.

Northville Township is largely subdivisions built from the 1990s on. The roofs are steeper, valleys funnel leaves from two slopes into short runs of gutter, and a lot of downspouts empty into buried drain lines. A buried line that backs up looks like a clogged downspout from the outside, so we make sure water reaches the far end.

The dates are the same on both sides of town. What changes is how much comes down and where it lands. We cover both halves in more detail on the Northville gutter cleaning page.

One fall visit or two

The trees over the roof decide whether a house needs one fall visit or two. Here's how we plan it:

Trees over the roof

When to book the fall visit

What to expect

Maples, no oaks

Early November

One visit once the maples are bare

Oaks over the roof

Second half of November

One visit after the oaks, before the freeze

Heavy oak and maple cover

Two visits, one after each

The gutters stay clear between the two drops

Young trees on an open lot

Late fall

The fall visit may be the only one the year needs

If you aren't sure which row fits, tell us about the trees when you book. With oaks over the roof, we'll say whether one fall visit will do or whether it takes two.

The spring visit is a separate job. MSU Extension notes that red, silver and Norway maples produce the largest quantities of winged seeds, and that those seeds can clog gutters and downspouts. The fall visit clears leaves. The spring visit clears seeds and whatever winter left behind.

What the fall visit covers

Every fall gutter cleaning in Northville gets the same work:

  • Every gutter cleared by hand. A leaf blower lifts the dry top layer and leaves the wet mat behind, so we pull the mat out.

  • Every downspout flushed with water and checked running clear at the bottom. If one is blocked, we run a snake through it until the water flows.

  • Buried drain lines checked for flow at the far end.

  • Removable gutter guards lifted, cleaned underneath and put back.

  • Leaves and needles on the roof just above the gutter pulled off, so the next rain doesn't wash them straight in.

  • Debris bagged and hauled away, and anything that lands on the walks or the beds picked up.

  • A word afterward on what we saw, such as loose hangers, soft fascia or a section holding standing water.

You don't need to be home. Leave the gate unlatched and an outdoor spigot on, and we can flush the downspouts.

Booking gutters with other fall work

Late October through early December is when gutter cleaning, outside window cleaning and Christmas light installation all happen, and the first lasting cold ends the season for each of them. Booking them together in October gets every one of them on the calendar before that.

Gutters go first. Grit from a gutter can land on clean glass, and the gutters need to be clear before light clips go on. Our window cleaning and Christmas light installation pages cover those services.

The same calendar applies in the other towns we work in, including Novi and Plymouth. The full list is on our gutter cleaning service areas page, and what's included everywhere is on our main gutter cleaning page.

Questions people ask

Is October too early for gutter cleaning in Northville?

For a house with oaks over the roof, yes. An early October cleaning clears the maple leaves, and the oaks refill the gutters before the freeze. With only maples overhead, a late October or early November visit can work. With oaks, book in October and set the date for the second half of November.

What happens if leaves are still in the gutters when it freezes?

The water they hold freezes in the trough. Ice and wet leaves add weight to the hangers, a frozen downspout stays blocked until spring, and meltwater coming off the roof has nowhere to drain. That frozen block at the roof edge also gives an ice dam something to build on.

Do I need two fall gutter cleanings if I have oak trees?

Only if the oaks and maples over the roof are heavy enough to overflow the gutters between their drops. A house with a few oaks can wait for one visit in the second half of November. Under heavy cover of both, one visit after the maples and one after the oaks keeps water moving all fall.

Does someone have to be home for a fall gutter cleaning?

No. We need the gate open and a working outdoor spigot, because every downspout gets flushed with water. If you shut the spigots off for winter, leave one on until after the visit. When we're done, we'll tell you what we saw on the hangers, the fascia and the slope of the gutters.
