The visit
How residential window cleaning works
Glass Guru Window Cleaning's residential window cleaning covers the inside and the outside of your glass. Interior panes are hand cleaned along with the screens, the sills and the tracks, and exterior panes are cleaned with deionized pure water fed through a water-fed pole, so the glass dries clear without spots.
Book the inside, the outside or both. Each one is done its own way.
Screens, sills and tracks are part of every interior window cleaning at no extra charge.

Count the windows
We count your windows and note the divided lights, the storms and anything above the first floor. Your quote is built from that count.
- Storm windows and divided-light windows noted separately in the quote
02
Pick the season
Inside work runs all year. Outside work runs March through November, because the rinse water would freeze on the glass in winter.

- Second-story and dormer glass reached from the ground where access allows
- Cobwebs cleared from the corners of every opening we touch
Exterior only: We need access to the yard and to an outdoor spigot, and that is it.
We point out anything we find, like cracked seals, failed glazing or rotted sills

Tell us about your windows and we'll price it
Storm windows, divided-light windows and arched transoms take longer to clean, so we count them separately in the quote.

How your quote is worked out
Window cleaning is quoted from your windows: how many, how many have divided panes or storms, and how high they are.
What moves the number, in rough order of how much it moves it:
- Total window count
- How many of them are divided-light or grid windows
- Whether exterior storms have to come off and go back on
- How many openings sit above the first floor
- Whether you want inside and out or just the outside
How long it takes
The length of a window cleaning visit is set by the same things that set the price: the window count, the number of divided-light openings, whether storm windows have to be taken out and refitted, and how many openings are above the first floor. We give you the expected time along with the quote.
Hard water
The spots on your windows are minerals from the water
The tap water around here comes from the Detroit River through the Great Lakes Water Authority, and it carries enough calcium and magnesium to leave a film when it dries. Irrigation wells in the Oakland County townships are harder still. A sprinkler that hits a first-floor window leaves a new layer of minerals every time it runs.
Washing glass with tap water rinses some minerals off and leaves fresh ones behind. That's why the spots come back.
Left long enough, the minerals start to etch the glass. Etched glass can't always be cleaned, and sometimes it has to be replaced. If a sprinkler head is hitting your windows, turning it a few degrees is the cheapest fix there is.
Why we filter the water first
- We filter the rinse water by reverse osmosis and deionization, so there are no minerals left in it to dry on the glass.
- If your glass is already etched, we'll tell you before we start.

“The screens were so clean, they disappeared.”
Questions
Common residential window cleaning questions in Metro Detroit
How much does window cleaning cost in Metro Detroit?
Window cleaning prices come down to four things: how many windows you have, how many have divided lights or grids, whether storm windows have to come off, and how many are above the first floor. Send your address and a rough window count to get a price.
How often should windows be cleaned in Michigan?
For most homes here, twice a year: once in late spring after the tree pollen is done, and once in early fall. If you only do it once, make it spring, because that visit clears the winter road film and the pollen together. Homes with sprinklers hitting the glass or a busy salted road out front do better with three.
Do you clean the screens, sills and tracks?
Yes. Every interior window cleaning includes the screens, sills and tracks. We take the screens out and wash them. We vacuum the sills and tracks first and then wipe them, because old grit just smears under a wet cloth. Interior mirrors can be added to the same visit.
What is deionized water and why does it matter?
It's water with the minerals filtered out, first by reverse osmosis and then by a deionizing resin. Spots on glass are minerals left behind when ordinary water dries. With no minerals in the water, the glass dries clear without a squeegee or soap. The same water feeds the pole we use on second-story glass.
Can you remove hard water stains from my windows?
Sometimes. Fresh mineral deposits sitting on the surface respond to acid-based restoration work, which is quoted separately from a regular cleaning. Deposits baked on over several summers of sprinkler spray have usually etched the glass. Etched glass can't be cleaned back to clear, and replacement is the only real fix. We'll tell you which one you have.
Do you clean windows in winter?
Interior window cleaning, yes, all year, and January and February are the easiest months to book. Outside work runs March through November, because the rinse water would freeze on the glass, the siding and your walk. We'll tell you at booking if an outside date needs to wait for spring.
Do you clean second-story windows without a ladder?
Most of them. A water-fed pole reaches typical second-story and dormer windows from the ground, which keeps ladders off your landscaping and your gutters. Some windows still need a ladder, where a roofline, a deck or a planting bed blocks the angle. We'll point those out when we quote.
Do you clean storm windows and old divided-light windows?
Yes. They're priced separately because they take longer. An older Northville or Plymouth home can have twelve or sixteen small panes in a single window, and a storm window has to come off, get cleaned on both sides and go back on straight. A fair quote counts them, so the job doesn't get rushed on the day.
Will my windows still get spots after it rains?
Rain on its own rarely spots glass. The spots come from rain running off a dirty frame, gutters overflowing across a window, or sprinklers, which carry the most minerals. If your windows spot up a week after a cleaning, watch your sprinklers run and look for a head hitting the house. Turning it costs nothing.
Do I need to be home for the appointment?
Not for outside work. We need to get into the yard and use an outdoor spigot. For inside work someone has to let us in, and it goes faster if plants and breakables are off the sills. We work around blinds and curtains, and we don't take them down or move furniture.
The detail
Residential window cleaning, explained
Glass Guru cleans windows inside and out for homes in Northville, Novi, Plymouth, Canton, Livonia, Commerce Township, West Bloomfield and Farmington Hills. Whether you call it window cleaning or window washing, it's the same visit. Inside, the screens, sills and tracks are part of the job. Outside, we use our deionized magic wand, a water-fed pole that runs pure water, so the glass dries without spots. Window cleaning is a pain in the glass, and that's why this business exists.
What a residential window cleaning includes
Inside: every pane cleaned by hand, screens taken out and washed, sills and tracks vacuumed and wiped, frames and grids wiped down, and mirrors on request. Outside: every pane we can reach, cleaned with pure water, plus the frames and the cobwebs. Book either one on its own, or both.
Most people book both, and the outside gets done more often. Outside glass here takes road spray in March, pollen in April and May, sprinkler spray in summer and leaf stains in the fall. Inside glass collects dust, cooking film and, with kids or dogs, prints low on the sliders.
Tracks are the part people underestimate. A track that hasn't been cleaned in years is packed with dirt, dead insects, paint chips and pollen, and a rag just smears it. We vacuum them out first, then wipe. It's the biggest difference you'll notice between a careful interior cleaning and a fast one.
What the deionized magic wand does
It's a water-fed pole running water with the minerals filtered out, first by reverse osmosis and then by a deionizing resin. Pure water cleans well on its own, and because nothing is dissolved in it, nothing is left on the glass when it dries. No squeegee, no soap and no drying.
That has two practical results. The finish gets better over the first couple of cleanings, as each pass rinses old soap residue out of the frame edges, and that residue is what causes the drips people notice a day later. The pole also reaches from the ground, so most second-story bedrooms, dormers and the glass over a walkout basement get cleaned without a ladder against the siding or the gutter.
Inside glass is still cleaned by hand, because a pole and a hose don't belong in your living room. Each method gets used where it works best.
Hard water and sprinklers in Metro Detroit
Sprinkler spray is the most common cause of permanent window damage we see on Michigan homes, and people rarely know it until a window cleaner points it out. A head that hits the bottom of a first-floor window puts mineral-heavy water on the glass, the sun dries it, and it happens again every other morning all summer.
For the first season or two, the deposit is a stain, and acid-based restoration work can take it off. After several seasons it turns into etching: the minerals bond into the surface and take a microscopic layer of glass with them. Nothing cleans that back. The pane gets replaced, or it stays cloudy.
So the first fix costs nothing. Walk your irrigation zones while they're running and look for any head spraying the house. Turning it a few degrees or lowering the arc takes five minutes and saves the glass. If we see one hitting your windows, we'll tell you.
Storm windows, divided lights and two-story foyers
The houses around here split into two kinds of job that price very differently. It helps to know which one you have before you compare quotes.
Older homes, like those in the Downtown Northville Historic District, around Kellogg Park in Plymouth and in Plymouth's Old Village north of Ann Arbor Trail, tend to have wood sash with true divided lights and separate storm windows. One window can be twelve or sixteen small panes plus a storm that has to come off, get cleaned on both sides and go back on straight. That's slow, careful work, and a price that assumes one sheet of glass will be far too low.
Newer homes, in most of the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions in Novi, Canton, Northville Township and Commerce Township, have fewer panes and more height: two-story entry foyers with arched Palladian transoms, great rooms with glass up to the second floor, and stairwell windows that haven't been cleaned inside since the house was built. Those jobs are about reach and safety.
Livonia sits in between. Most of the city was built between 1950 and 1970, with brick ranches, colonials and split-levels that have big picture windows and aluminum storms. Picture windows clean fast and look great when they're done, which makes Livonia exteriors some of the best value we quote.
When to book window cleaning in Michigan
Two visits a year suit most homes: late spring after the tree pollen is done, and early fall before the weather turns. If you only book one, book spring. That visit clears a winter of road salt film and a spring of pollen together.
Michigan's weather sets the calendar. Outside window cleaning runs March through November. Below freezing, rinse water turns to ice on your siding and your walk, so once the overnight lows drop we stop booking outside work until spring. Inside cleaning runs all year, and January and February are the easiest months to get on the schedule.
Two dates worth knowing. Late April into May is peak pollen from the maples and oaks, so a cleaning just before it won't last. And the film on storm doors and lower windows in March is road salt, thrown up by traffic and your own driveway. Water takes it off easily, and a dry cloth just smears it.
How window cleaning is priced in Metro Detroit
We build every window cleaning quote from your windows. We count them and note which ones have divided lights, which have storms and which are above the first floor.
What moves the number, in rough order of how much it moves it: total window count, how many of them are divided-light or grid windows, whether exterior storms have to come off and go back on, how many openings sit above the first floor, and whether you want inside and out or just the outside. If you're also booking gutter cleaning, we do the gutters first.
Being home for the appointment
For outside work, no. We need access to the yard and to an outdoor spigot, and that is it. For inside work, someone needs to let us in, and it helps to move breakables off the sills first. We work around furniture and window treatments, and we don't move them or take them down.
Send your address and a rough window count, and we'll come back with a real number. If you'd rather we count them, we can come out and do that.
