What Canton does to your roofline

  • Tall front peaks in the newer subdivisions

Canton's 1990s and 2000s houses put a two-story entry under the front gable, so the peak sits above the second-floor windows. It's the line people see first from the street and the hardest one to reach. We plan the ladder setup before install day.

  • A big township with long rooflines

Canton has 27,810 owner-occupied homes, more than any other town we serve. Many have an attached garage facing the street, which adds another roofline. Lighting the garage and the house together makes the front read as one piece.

  • December on the roof

In December the Detroit Metro thermometer averages 37.2 at its high and 25.3 at its low, by NOAA's climate normals. Morning frost and freezing rain make a roof slick, so installs happen in the fall, before that weather settles in for the season.

Why it happens in Canton

Canton built in two waves, and both reach high

Canton's houses come from two building booms. Twenty-nine percent date from the 1970s, and another 41 percent from 1990 through 2009, according to the Census Bureau.

The first wave gave the township long two-story colonials. The second gave it two-story entries with a tall front peak and a garage gable beside it. Either way, the top of the roofline is a long climb for anyone working alone.

How we handle it in Canton

  • We bring the lights. You don't buy a single strand.
  • Front peaks on 1990s and 2000s colonials hung by Glass Guru.
  • Garage gables and porch roofs included when you want them lit.
  • Installs scheduled while autumn weather holds.
  • Takedown in January, part of the same service.

Questions

Christmas lights questions from Canton homeowners

Do you offer Christmas light installation everywhere in Canton Township?

Yes. We work across Canton, from the older neighborhoods to the newest subdivisions, and the township is a short drive from our base in Northville. Send your address and the rooflines you have in mind, and a quote comes your way.

How much is Christmas light installation for a Canton colonial?

Each house is quoted on its own. Total footage, the height of the front peak, the roof pitch and any garage or porch lines all move the price. A 1970s colonial with long eaves and a 2000s colonial with stacked gables can come out different even at the same size. Ask and we'll price yours.

Does Christmas light installation in Canton include the garage?

It can. If your garage faces the street, its gable is part of what people see, and lighting it with the house ties the front together. Add it to your request and it goes into the price. You choose what gets lit.

When do Canton Christmas lights come down?

In January. Coming back for the lights is part of what you're paying for, so after the holidays we remove them all. You don't have to book it separately or get on a ladder when the January low averages 19 degrees.

What's the best month to book Christmas lights in Canton?

September or October. That leaves time to get on the schedule and get the lights up before the first snow. A dry roof is a safe roof, and by December, ice and frost make dry days harder to find in southeast Michigan.

The detail

Christmas lights in Canton, explained

Two kinds of Canton house

A 1970s colonial and a 2004 colonial both have two stories, but the rooflines differ. The older houses have long, plain eaves across the front. The newer ones break the front into gables, with a tall peak over the entry and a second gable over the garage. We quote each house by its own lines, so you pay for what's on your roof.

Start to finish

We provide the lights and install them on your house. You decide which rooflines and which color. In January, with the holidays behind us, we come back for the takedown. That's a full Christmas light installation with no ladder work for you.

When Canton should book

Call in September or October. Canton is a big township, and every install has to fit between dry days. Detroit Metro's average first fall freeze lands after mid-October, and the shingles get less forgiving after that.
