The visit

How chandelier cleaning works

Glass Guru Window Cleaning's chandelier cleaning is for the high light fixtures a household ladder cannot safely reach, which in many Metro Detroit homes means the chandelier hanging eighteen to twenty-two feet above a two-story entry foyer. Crystal drops and prisms come down and are hand cleaned, glass shades are washed, and burnt-out bulbs are replaced while the access is already there.

We bring the equipment to reach a foyer chandelier safely. You don't climb anything.

When we come

Spring is the best time for a chandelier cleaning, right after the heating season.

Chandelier cleaning is priced per fixture, based on its height, the access, how many pieces it has and whether it can be lowered on a winch.

How long it takes

How long a chandelier takes depends on the access and the number of pieces. Setting up safely under a fixture that hangs out past the stairs is the slow part. We'll tell you how long it should take when we quote it.

From the phone call I knew I was dealing with professionals. Very kind and honest. Their work was so clean .. they worked so hard and were very detailed in making sure not one piece of the crystals on the chandelier fell off. I couldn’t believe the construction dust was all gone and it looked like I had new chandeliers . I highly recommend without reservation ! Such kind staff and very very thorough!

Out of reach

Foyer chandeliers rarely get cleaned, because they're hard to reach

A lot of two-story foyers in the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions around here have a chandelier eighteen to twenty-two feet above a tile floor, next to the stairs and right over the front door. Everyone sees it on the way in, and it rarely gets cleaned.

There's nowhere safe to put a household ladder. So the fixture collects dust for years, and forced-air heat from November through March keeps adding more.

Dust on crystal blocks the light. A dusty chandelier looks dim, which is why people change the bulbs long before they think to clean it.

Reaching it safely

  • Clean crystal throws more light. A dusty chandelier looks dim even with new bulbs.
  • Some fixtures can be lowered on a winch, which makes the job simpler.

Questions

Common chandelier cleaning questions in Northville, MI

How much does chandelier cleaning cost?

Each fixture is priced on how high it hangs, how hard it is to reach, how many pieces come off and go back on, and whether it can be lowered on a winch. A five-arm glass fixture in a dining room and a three-tier crystal fixture in a twenty-foot foyer are very different jobs.

How do you clean a chandelier in a two-story foyer?

We bring equipment made for the space and cover the floor and stairs first. Reaching the fixture is why these chandeliers go uncleaned for years: they hang eighteen to twenty-two feet above a hard floor, out past the stairs, where no household ladder can safely go. If yours can be lowered on a winch, the job goes faster.

How often should a chandelier be cleaned?

Once a year for most homes, and spring makes sense because it comes right after the heating season that left the dust. Kitchen and dining room fixtures do better twice a year, because cooking grease mixes with the dust into a sticky film. A fixture in a room nobody uses can go two years.

Will you replace burnt-out bulbs while you are up there?

Yes. Candelabra bulbs in a high fixture burn out one at a time, and since changing one means the same climb as cleaning, they pile up until the entry looks dim. We check every socket. Tell us the bulb type ahead of time, or leave the replacement bulbs out for us.

Do you take the crystals off or clean them in place?

On a real crystal fixture, we take them off. The drops and prisms come down, get cleaned by hand and go back exactly where they were. A spray-and-drip cleaner can work on a simple glass fixture, but it leaves grease on kitchen pendants, skips the metal frame and drips onto the floor below.

Why does my chandelier look dim even with new bulbs?

Dust on crystal blocks the light. Crystal works by bending and scattering light, and a grey film absorbs it before it leaves the fixture. That's why people swap in new bulbs, then brighter bulbs, and the entry still looks dim. Cleaning the crystal usually brings the light back.

Do you clean mirrors and interior glass railings?

Yes. We clean bathroom mirrors, full-wall mirrors, closet doors and over-mantel mirrors, and interior glass stair and balcony rails on both sides. Rails are one of the quickest visible improvements in a two-story room. Outdoor glass deck railings get the same pure-water cleaning as windows.

Do you clean exterior light fixtures?

Yes, and it's easiest to add to an exterior window cleaning, since we're already working around the house. Coach lights, post lamps and soffit lights collect bugs and cobwebs over a season. We open them, clean the glass and the housing, and change any dead bulbs while we're there.

What if something is broken or missing on my fixture?

We tell you. Loose pins, missing crystals, a cracked arm or a canopy that doesn't sit flush all get pointed out. We're not electricians and we don't rewire fixtures, so anything involving the wiring gets referred to someone who does.

Can you clean ceiling fans and high shelves at the same time?

Yes, and it's worth asking, because setting up the equipment is the big part of the visit. Ceiling fan blades in a vaulted room, high plant shelves and the tops of two-story window frames add little once we're up there. Walk the house with us and point things out.

The detail

Chandelier cleaning, explained

Glass Guru cleans chandeliers and high light fixtures in homes across Northville, Novi, Plymouth, Canton, Livonia, Commerce Township, West Bloomfield and Farmington Hills. Most calls are about the same fixture: the one hanging over the hard floor of a two-story entry foyer, where there's no sensible way to get a ladder underneath it.

Why chandeliers get dirty faster in Michigan

Forced-air heat is the main reason. From November through March the furnace cycles with the house shut up, and each cycle pushes fine dust out of the registers. The dust rises and settles on the highest surfaces in the house, and a chandelier is mostly high surfaces.

Five months of heating season is a long time for dust to build up, and the fixture is too high for anyone to see it from below. What people notice is a dim entry. They change the bulbs, which doesn't help much, and then try brighter bulbs, which doesn't help either, because the light is being absorbed by a grey film before it leaves the fixture.

Kitchen fixtures have a second problem. Cooking grease rises and lands on pendants over the island and anything above the stove, where it mixes with dust into a sticky film that dusting won't lift. Those fixtures need washing.

How a chandelier gets cleaned properly

We turn the power off at the switch, and at the breaker when the fixture calls for it, and cover the floor and furniture below. Then we work from the top down. Crystal drops and prisms come off and get cleaned by hand, glass shades get washed, and the frame, arms and canopy get wiped. Everything goes back exactly where it came from.

There's a faster method, sometimes sold as drip cleaning, where the fixture gets sprayed over a sheet on the floor and left to drip dry. It can work on a simple glass fixture over a forgiving floor. Over hardwood or tile it's a bad idea, it won't touch the sticky film on a kitchen pendant, and it leaves the metal frame dirty. On real crystal we take the pieces off and clean them by hand.

Bulbs are the other half of the visit. Candelabra bulbs in a foyer fixture burn out one at a time, and since changing one means the same climb as cleaning, the dead ones add up. We check every socket and replace the failed bulbs while the equipment is up. Leave out the bulbs you want used, or tell us the type ahead of time.

We also tell you what we find. Loose pins, missing crystals, a cracked arm or a canopy that isn't sitting flush all get pointed out, so nothing is left for the next person to discover.

The access problem in two-story foyers

This is the real reason to hire someone. A foyer chandelier in a 1990s or 2000s colonial hangs eighteen to twenty-two feet up, over tile or hardwood, often out past the edge of the stairs. No household ladder reaches it safely, and improvised setups with stair treads and a plank are how people get badly hurt at home.

We bring equipment suited to the space and protect the floor and stairs before we start. Some fixtures hang on a winch and can be lowered, which makes the job faster. Plenty of homeowners don't know whether theirs does until someone gets up there and looks.

While the equipment is up, other high jobs in the same space are easy to add: ceiling fan blades in a vaulted great room, a plant shelf nobody has reached in years, the top of a two-story window frame. It's worth a walk through the house with us to point them out.

Mirrors, glass rails and exterior light fixtures

These three jobs fall into the same gap: glass in a house that isn't a window, so it never gets included in anything.

We clean mirrors too: bathroom mirrors, full-wall mirrors, closet doors and over-mantel mirrors. Full-wall mirrors are worth doing properly, because glass cleaner and paper towels leave a haze you only see when light hits it from the side, and once it builds up it has to be stripped off.

Glass rails on an interior stair or a balcony over a two-story room get touched on both sides all day and sit right where everyone looks. They clean quickly, and the difference is bigger than the effort. Outside, glass deck and balcony railings collect the same sprinkler spots as windows, and they need the same pure-water cleaning.

Outdoor light fixtures are a small job of their own. Coach lights, post lamps and soffit fixtures fill with bugs and cobwebs, and a dirty fixture makes the entry look dim and the walkway feel unsafe. We open them, clean the glass and the housing, clear out what's collected and replace dead bulbs. It's quick to add to an window cleaning visit, since we're already working around the house.

How often a chandelier needs cleaning

Plan on a yearly cleaning, ideally in spring, right after the heating season. Fixtures over a dining table or a kitchen island do better twice a year. One in a formal room nobody uses can wait two years.

The easiest way to schedule it is with an interior window cleaning visit. Both are indoor work, both are best done in the first half of the year, and both keep going after the outside work stops in November.

How chandelier cleaning is priced

Chandelier cleaning is priced per fixture. Its height, the access, the number of pieces and whether it can be lowered all move the price, so a five-arm glass fixture in a dining room and a three-tier crystal cascade in a twenty-foot foyer are very different jobs.

A photo from the floor looking up and a rough ceiling height are usually enough for us to quote it without a visit.
