What Commerce Township does to your roofline

  • Walkout lots that drop toward the water

Many lake lots fall away behind the house, so the back roofline sits a story above the front. A walkout basement turns a two-story house into three stories on the lake side. That height takes planning and the right ladder.

  • Exposed rooflines on the water

A roofline that faces open water has nothing between it and the winter wind. Lights there need to be hung carefully and checked as they go up. We plan the water-facing side as its own part of the job.

  • Fall weather sets the schedule

NWS freeze records for Detroit Metro put the first fall freeze in the back half of October. After that, morning frost on the shingles is common, so Commerce installs get booked in September and October and hung on dry days.

Why it happens in Commerce Township

Commerce homes face the street and the lake

Commerce Township wraps around a chain of inland lakes, including Commerce Lake, Lower Straits Lake and Wolverine Lake. A lake house has two fronts: the one on the road and the one facing the water.

Inland, Commerce gets younger: half its homes postdate 1991, and 41 percent were built from 1990 to 2009, per the American Community Survey. Those are two-story colonials with long front rooflines.

How we handle it in Commerce Township

  • We provide the lights.
  • Street-side and lake-side rooflines both available, quoted together.
  • Two-story colonials in the newer subdivisions hung by Glass Guru.
  • Installs in the fall, before there's ice on the roof.
  • Takedown in January.

Questions

Christmas lights questions from Commerce Township homeowners

Can Commerce Township lake homes get Christmas light installation on both sides?

Yes. We light the road side, the lake side or both. The lake side can be taller if the lot drops to a walkout, so flag it in your request. We'll look at the rooflines you want lit and price the house as it is.

What decides the cost of Christmas lights on a Commerce house?

The roofline. Length comes first, then height: the peaks, the lake-side eaves, the roof pitch and extra lines like a porch or garage. Two houses of the same size can price differently when one backs onto the water.

When should I book Christmas light installation in Commerce Township?

In September or October. That gives the install a dry roof and beats the cold that settles in by late November. Lake homes take longer to plan, so an early call helps there in particular. Takedown follows in January.

Do Commerce homeowners supply their own Christmas lights?

No, Glass Guru does, and we hang them and take them down in January. Choose the rooflines and the color, anything from classic white to multicolor, and we bring what your house needs. Our gallery has real installs if you'd like to point to one.

Do Commerce Township lights come down on a set date?

January, after the holidays, is takedown time, and it's part of the service. You don't have to arrange anything. We come back, clears the street side and the lake side, and leaves the rooflines bare.

The detail

Christmas lights in Commerce Township, explained

The township tree lighting

Commerce Township Parks and Recreation holds its tree lighting at the Richardson Community Center on East Oakley Park Road. In 2025 it ran on December 6, with Santa, crafts, cookies and cocoa, and the township says it will be back in 2026. A fall booking gets your own lights up by then.

Three parts to the job

We bring the lights, hang them on your home and remove them in January. You choose which rooflines, which side of the house and which color. You don't climb a ladder, test a strand or deal with any of it after the holidays.

Lakefront streets and inland subdivisions

The Village of Wolverine Lake is a separate municipality inside the township, and the lakes shape a lot of the township's streets. Inland, the subdivisions skew newer: 20 percent of Commerce homes went up in the 2000s and 21 percent in the 1990s. A lake house and a subdivision colonial get quoted on their own rooflines.
