Northville is our home town, and window cleaning here often means old wood sash. Downtown, one window can be a dozen small panes with a storm over the top, and every piece comes apart to get clean. Screens get washed and tracks get vacuumed on every inside job.

What Northville does to your windows

  • True divided-light sash and wood storms downtown

The older homes around Main and Center streets have real muntins, and many have wood or triple-track storms over the top. That's three glass surfaces per window and a dozen small panes in each sash. It's slow, careful hand work, and it's why a downtown Northville house takes longer than a township house the same size.

  • Tall entry and Palladian glass in the township subdivisions

Northville Township filled in with two-story colonials that have an arched Palladian window over the front door and a stairwell window nobody can reach. Homeowners give up on those panes. A water-fed pole handles most of them from the driveway without a ladder touching the house.

  • Sprinkler spray on the bottom row of glass

Irrigation is standard on Northville lots, and the heads nearest the house mist the lower panes every cycle. Over a season that builds a hard mineral crust along the bottom of the glass that a regular cleaning won't lift. It needs a restoration pass first, and it comes back unless the heads get turned away from the house.

How your quote is worked out

Window cleaning is quoted from your windows: how many, how many have divided panes or storms, and how high they are.

How long it takes

The length of a window cleaning visit is set by the same things that set the price: the window count, the number of divided-light openings, whether storm windows have to be taken out and refitted, and how many openings are above the first floor. We give you the expected time along with the quote.

Why it happens in Northville

Northville windows spot up from sprinklers and road salt

Two things cause most of the spotting here. The first is sprinkler water. Irrigation heads mist the lower panes every summer morning, the water dries, and the calcium and magnesium stay behind as a chalky film. Rinsing with a hose adds another layer. The second is winter. Northville roads get salted from the first freeze through March, tires throw the brine onto storm doors, sidelights and the bottom third of front windows, and it dries into a grey haze that a paper towel just smears. So cleaning glass here means removing minerals. That's why we use purified water outside and clean every pane by hand inside.

How we handle it in Northville

  • Outside glass cleaned with a water-fed pole running deionized water, our magic wand, so it dries without spots.
  • Inside glass cleaned by hand with drop cloths on the sills and floors and every edge detailed. On the divided-light sash in the historic district, each small pane gets worked on its own.
  • Screens taken out, brushed and rinsed, tracks vacuumed and wiped, and sills cleaned inside and out, all as part of the interior cleaning.
  • Wood and aluminum storm windows taken off, cleaned on both sides and put back, so you're looking through one clean layer of glass on a downtown home.
  • Two-story foyer glass and arched transoms cleaned from the ground with the pole wherever it reaches, with no ladder against your siding or in your landscaping.

“I am very pleased with their service and quality and have no reservations at all on recommending them.”

Questions

Window cleaning questions from Northville homeowners

How much does window cleaning cost in Northville?

The windows decide it: how many there are, how many have divided lights or a storm that comes off and goes back on, and how far up the top row sits. Say if the inside is on the list as well. A downtown Northville house with divided-light sash and wood storms is a very different job from a township colonial with big single panes, even at the same size. Send the address and we'll get a quote back to you.

How often should Northville windows be cleaned?

For most homes here, twice a year does it: late spring after the pollen is done, and again in the fall. If sprinklers hit your lower windows, or you back onto Maybury State Park or the Hines Park corridor and get extra tree litter, a third visit is worth it.

Can you remove the hard water spots on my lower windows?

Usually. If the minerals are sitting on the surface, a restoration pass before the regular cleaning takes them off. If sprinkler spray has been baking onto the same panes for years, the glass can be etched, and etching is permanent. We'll tell you which you have before we charge you for it, and we'll point out the sprinkler head causing it.

Do you clean storm windows and the tracks and screens too?

Yes. Screens come out, get brushed and rinsed and go back in, tracks are vacuumed and wiped, and sills are cleaned inside and out as part of every interior cleaning. Storm windows get done too, on both sides, and on the older houses near downtown that's often where most of the haze is.

Do you work in both the city and Northville Township?

Both. Northville is where we're based, so scheduling here is easy. Tell us the cross streets when you get in touch, and we'll send you a quote. We also work in Novi, Plymouth, Canton, Livonia, Farmington Hills, Commerce Township, West Bloomfield, Bloomfield Hills and Birmingham.

Is the tap water here hard enough to spot my windows?

Yes. Northville Township's 2025 water report puts its hardness at about 6 grains per gallon, which the U.S. Geological Survey calls moderately hard. When that water dries on glass, the minerals stay behind as spots. Rinsing the outside with deionized water, which has the minerals taken out, is how we avoid adding any.

The detail

Window cleaning in Northville, explained

One city, two governments, two kinds of glass

Northville is two places on the map. The City of Northville is small and older, and it straddles the county line, with Eight Mile Road, which locals call Baseline, splitting Wayne from Oakland. Northville Charter Township wraps around it to the south and has about five times the population. The city holds most of the pre-war houses, the wood sash and the storm windows. The township holds the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions, the two-story entries and the tall arched glass. We quote and schedule both, and we price them differently, because they're different jobs.

Pure water outside, and why tap water spots

Outside, we use a water-fed pole with the water run through a deionizing resin bed. Southeast Michigan water is hard, and every drop left on a pane carries minerals that stay put when the water dries. Take the minerals out and the same water rinses the glass and dries clean, with no squeegee, no towel and no spots. The pole also reaches second-story and stairwell glass from the ground, which keeps ladders off your gutters, your landscaping and your roof on a wet spring morning.

Inside, it is still hands and a squeegee

Inside glass gets cleaned the traditional way, by hand. Drop cloths go down on sills and floors, each pane gets solution and a squeegee, and every edge gets detailed so no haze is left in the corners. Screens come out and get brushed and rinsed, tracks get vacuumed and wiped, and sills get cleaned on both sides. On a downtown house with storms, we take them off, clean both sides and put them back. If a fixture hangs in the middle of all that entry glass, ask about chandelier cleaning while we're set up.

How old Northville's houses are

The two halves of Northville are different ages. In the city, the median house was built in 1968, and close to a quarter of the homes date from 1939 or earlier, according to Census Bureau estimates for 2020–2024. In the township the median is 1993, and the 2000s were its busiest building decade. That split is behind the two kinds of glass here: old sash and storms in the city, tall double-pane glass in the township.

The oldest buildings in town are gathered at Mill Race Village, where the Northville Historical Society has moved historic buildings from around the area, including the 1851 Greek Revival Hunter House. Glass that old is thin and wavy, and the putty holding it cracks if it's pushed, which is why city jobs get hand work, one pane at a time.

When to book, and what the Michigan calendar does to it

Outside work here runs from March into November, and it books up in two waves: spring, after the tree pollen is done, and October, before the holidays. Inside work runs all year, and January and February are the easiest months to get a date. That's also when furnace film and fireplace haze on the inside of the glass are at their worst. If you want the windows done and Christmas lights hung the same season, tell us early, because the light installs fill up in the fall.
