Eaves, hedges and evergreens

Christmas light installation in Livonia, on the ranches and colonials along the Mile Roads. We provide the lights, string them along your roofline and take them down in January. A one-story house still means ladder work in the cold, and we do it for you.

What Livonia does to your roofline

  • Long eaves on postwar ranches

Ranch houses put the whole roofline at one height, so the lights run in a single long line from one end of the house to the other. Any sag or gap shows from the street. Getting it straight means moving the ladder every few feet, which is slow work for one person.

  • Frozen ground under the ladder

On a one-story house the ladder stands right at the foundation, on lawn or flower beds that freeze hard by December, when Detroit Metro nights average 25.3 degrees. Unfrozen ground in October or November is safer footing, and that's when we book installs.

  • Leaves in the gutters first

Lights on the eaves sit at the gutter line. If the gutters are still packed with fall leaves in November, clear them before the lights go up. We do gutter cleaning too, and the two can be booked together.

Why it happens in Livonia

A Livonia ranch is low, and the roofline is long

Livonia was built fast after the war. Thirty-two percent of its homes date from the 1950s and another 25 percent from the 1960s, and 86 percent are detached single-family houses, by the latest five-year Census numbers. A lot of them are ranches.

The roof edge on a ranch is in reach, but it runs the whole width of the house, and a neat line of lights along it takes many ladder moves on cold ground.

How we handle it in Livonia

  • The lights come from Glass Guru.
  • Long ranch eaves hung in one even line, corner to corner.
  • Colonials on the same streets lit to match.
  • Fall installs, booked before the first snow.
  • January takedown included.

Questions

Christmas lights questions from Livonia homeowners

Is Christmas light installation worth it on a one-story Livonia ranch?

A one-story house looks easy from the driveway. The eave is lower, but it runs the full width of the house, and a straight line of lights means moving the ladder every few feet on cold ground. We hang it, and we take it down in January, so you skip both trips up.

What does a Livonia Christmas light installation cost?

We quote each house. The length of roofline, one story or two, the pitch, and garage or porch roofs set the price. A 1950s ranch with one long eave is a different job from a 1960s colonial with gables, so describe what you'd like lit and where the house is.

Can you clean my Livonia gutters before Christmas light installation?

Yes. Gutter cleaning is one of our services, and Livonia's fall leaves end up in the gutters right where the lights hang. Clearing them first makes sense. Ask for both in one request and we'll schedule the two together.

When do you take Christmas lights down in Livonia?

Right after the holidays, in January. Taking them down comes with the installation, so you won't need to call anyone or do it yourself in the cold. We take the lights off the house and leave the eaves clear for the rest of the winter.

Is all of Livonia in range for Christmas light installation?

Yes. Livonia sits right next to Northville, where we're based, and we hang lights all over the city, on both sides of I-96. Send the address and the rooflines you'd like lit, and we'll reply with a price.

The detail

Christmas lights in Livonia, explained

Livonia's parade and tree lighting

Livonia's Merry & Bright Parade and Tree Lighting ran on Sunday, December 7, 2025, from Frost Middle School to City Hall, with the tree lit once Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived. Check the city's website for the 2026 date. If you'd like your house lit by parade day, get on our fall schedule.

What Glass Guru does

The lights are ours to provide. We string them along the rooflines and in the color you pick. January is when they come off again. You don't buy anything, untangle anything or climb anything.

Postwar houses, simple plans

Livonia's median house was built in 1964. On a ranch, the plan is one long run on the front eave, maybe the garage, and sometimes a porch roof. On a 1960s colonial, add a second story and a gable or two. Simple rooflines make for clean results, and the quote reflects the work that's there.

When to call

September through October. Livonia is next door to Northville, where we're based, so the hold-up is the weather. Once November turns wet and cold, with an average November low of 33.9 degrees at Detroit Metro, dry roof days get scarce.
