Those trees stand over small lots: in the county's 2025 parcel count, 4,061 of Birmingham's 7,275 house lots measure less than 8,000 square feet. So the canopy over one roof is the canopy over the next few, and the leaves land on all of them. The houses are older too, with a median build year of 1960. When a gutter overflows on a lot that narrow, the water drops beside the foundation with little ground around it to soak in, and a clogged downspout sends it over the front edge of the trough.
