The visit

How new construction window cleaning works

New construction window cleaning is the first cleaning Glass Guru Window Cleaning gives the windows of a new home or new commercial building, after the trades finish and before move-in or opening. Labels, glue, paint overspray, silicone, stucco and mortar splatter come off the glass, and drywall dust comes out of the tracks and sills, with the glass kept wet so grit never gets dragged across it.

One visit, after the trades finish and before anyone moves in or opens.

  1. 01

    Look at the glass

We count the windows and look at what's on them: labels, dust, paint, silicone or stucco. The quote comes from that.

  2. 02

    Wet it down

Every pane gets soaked and lubricated before anything touches it, so loose grit floats off the glass.

  3. 03

    Test, then one direction

A small spot gets tested first. Where a blade is needed, it moves one way only and stops if anything catches.

  4. 04

    Tracks and sills

Drywall dust comes out of the tracks and sills with a vacuum, then the frames get wiped down.

How long it takes

The length of a new construction window cleaning is set by the window count and by what's on the glass. Labels and dust come off quickly, and paint, silicone and stucco take longer, because each spot gets softened and tested first.

Scratch risk

A dry blade on new glass can leave a scratch

Construction leaves more on a window than dust. Stucco and mortar splatter, paint overspray, silicone smears and the glue from the manufacturer's labels all sit on the glass, and drywall dust packs into the tracks and sills.

The quick way to get that off is a razor blade on dry glass, and that's how new windows get scratched. Grit trapped under the blade drags across the pane. Tempered glass can also carry tiny bits of debris fused to its surface at the factory, and a blade that catches one pulls it along and cuts a line.

A scratch in glass doesn't wash out. The careful way is slower: keep the glass wet, test a small spot first, move the blade one way and stop the moment anything catches.

Why the glass stays wet

  • The glass stays wet and lubricated the whole time, so grit lifts off the surface and floats away.
  • Where a blade is needed, it moves in one direction only and lifts off the glass between passes.
  • If anything catches under the blade, the blade stops right there.

“They practically look brand new again.”

Questions

Common new construction window cleaning questions in Northville, MI

What is new construction window cleaning?

It's the first cleaning a building's windows get, done after the trades finish and before anyone moves in or opens. Manufacturer labels and glue, paint specks, silicone, stucco and mortar splatter come off the glass, and drywall dust comes out of the tracks and sills. We do it for new homes and new commercial buildings.

How much does new construction window cleaning cost?

New construction window cleaning is priced from the windows: how many there are, what's on the glass, how high they sit and whether you want inside, outside or both. Labels and dust come off quickly. Paint, silicone and stucco take longer. Send the address, a rough window count and a few photos to get a price.

When should new construction window cleaning be scheduled?

After the last trade leaves and before move-in or opening. Paint, final drywall sanding, flooring, grading and landscaping all put dust back on the glass, so booking earlier means cleaning twice. Outside glass in Michigan gets cleaned from March through November, and inside glass any month of the year.

Can new construction window cleaning scratch the glass?

It can if it's rushed. Grit under a blade on dry glass scratches it, and tempered glass can carry tiny bits of factory debris fused to its surface that a blade can drag. Careful work keeps the glass wet and lubricated, tests a small spot first, moves the blade one direction and stops when anything catches.

Do you remove window stickers and label glue?

Yes. The manufacturer's labels and stickers come off, and so does the glue they leave behind, which is the part that smears if you try it with a paper towel. The glass gets wetted first, so the residue softens and lifts off without being scraped dry.

Can you get paint, silicone and stucco off new windows?

Yes. Paint specks, overspray, silicone and caulk smears, and stucco or mortar splatter are what new construction window cleaning is for. Stucco and mortar get softened with water before anything touches them, and every spot is worked on wet glass. If anything catches under a blade, the work on that spot stops.

Do you clean windows on new commercial buildings?

Yes. New storefronts, offices and other commercial buildings get the same first cleaning as a new house, with every label, paint speck and film of dust cleared before opening day. Once you're open, the glass can move onto a regular commercial window cleaning route.

Do builders book new construction window cleaning?

Yes. Builders, general contractors and property managers book it as the last step before handing over a finished house or building, and homeowners book it before they move in. Send the address, the window count and when the trades will be done, and we'll quote it.

The detail

New construction window cleaning, explained

Glass Guru does new construction window cleaning for new homes and new commercial buildings in Northville, Novi, Plymouth, Canton, Livonia, Commerce Township, West Bloomfield and Farmington Hills. It's the first real cleaning a building's windows get, done once, after the build and before anyone moves in or opens the doors.

What new construction window cleaning covers

Every trade on a build leaves something on the windows. The window maker leaves labels and stickers, and the glue stays behind when they're peeled. Drywall sanding leaves a fine white dust that coats the glass and packs into the tracks and sills. Painters leave specks and overspray. The caulk and silicone around the frames ends up smeared on the panes, and stucco, mortar and concrete splatter lands on the outside glass.

A new construction window cleaning takes all of that off the glass, inside and out, and cleans the frames, tracks and sills while it's at it. Patio doors, entry door glass, sidelights and transoms are part of the job.

Why it differs from a routine cleaning

A routine window cleaning removes dirt that washes off. Construction debris is different. Paint, silicone, label glue and stucco are stuck to the glass, and the tool that removes them is a blade. A blade is also the tool that scratches new windows.

There are two ways it happens. Grit from the job site gets trapped under a blade on dry glass and drags across the pane. And tempered glass, the safety glass used in doors, beside doors and in large low panes, can carry fabricating debris: tiny particles fused to the surface in the factory furnace. You can't see them. A blade that catches one drags it along and leaves a scratch.

Scratched glass doesn't polish out the way a scuffed floor does, and on a brand new building it's the kind of damage nobody wants to argue about. That's why this job is done slowly.

How careful cleaners work on new glass

Wet first. The glass is soaked and kept lubricated the whole time, so loose grit floats off the surface. Stucco and mortar get softened with water before anything scrapes at them, and drywall dust comes out of the tracks with a vacuum, because a wet rag turns it into paste.

Test a small spot. Before working a whole pane, a careful cleaner tries a corner where a mark would be hard to see. If the glass behaves, the rest of the pane gets the same treatment.

Move the blade one way. Where a blade is needed, it travels forward only, on wet glass, and lifts off between passes. Dragging it back and forth is how a trapped particle gets pulled across the pane.

Stop when anything catches. If the blade snags or the glass feels gritty, the blade comes off right there, and that spot gets more water and a closer look.

It also helps to check the window maker's care sheet. Some makers publish cleaning instructions for their glass, and a few say not to use a blade at all. If you have the paperwork from the build, keep it handy for the visit.

When to book new construction window cleaning

After the last trade leaves. Paint, final drywall sanding, flooring and the last of the caulking all put dust and drips back on the glass, and so does exterior work like grading, landscaping and concrete. A cleaning booked before those finish gets done twice.

Before move-in or opening. Empty rooms are faster and safer to work in, and the glass is easier to reach before furniture, blinds and window treatments go in. For a store or an office, it's the last job before the doors open.

Michigan sets the outside calendar. Outside glass gets cleaned from March through November, because once it drops below freezing, water left on a pane turns to ice, and so does the runoff on the walks. Inside glass can be done in any month, so a winter closing can get the inside done now and the outside in March.

Who books it

Homeowners finishing a new build or a big addition, who want the windows clear before the moving truck arrives. Builders and general contractors handing a finished house to a buyer. Property managers getting a new building ready for tenants. And businesses opening a new storefront or office, where the front glass is the first thing a customer sees. For glass that needs cleaning on a schedule after opening, that's our commercial window cleaning route, and for a home it's residential window cleaning.

How new construction window cleaning is priced

From the windows and from what's on them. The window count matters, and so does the mess: glass with labels and dust is quick, and glass with paint, silicone or stucco on it takes longer, because each spot gets softened and tested first. Height and access matter too, and so does whether you want both sides of the glass or one.

Send the address, a rough window count and when the trades will be done. A few photos of the worst glass help us price it.
