What Plymouth does to your roofline

  • Century-old houses near Kellogg Park

Plymouth's older blocks sit close to downtown, and a lot of them predate 1940. Porches wrap corners, dormers break up the roof, and side yards are tight. Each break in the roofline is another start and stop for the lights, which is why these houses take longer to hang than their size suggests.

  • Township colonials from the 1970s

Plymouth Township built 27 percent of its homes in the 1970s. Those colonials have long eaves and a garage roof out front. They're simpler to light, and the second story is still high enough that a homeowner on a ladder is working at full stretch.

  • Takedown in the coldest month

January is the coldest month at Detroit Metro, with an average low of 19.2 degrees and 14 inches of snow over the 1991 to 2020 period. That's the month the lights come down. We do that part, so you don't spend a January Saturday prying frozen strands off the house.

Why it happens in Plymouth

Plymouth has some of the oldest houses we light

Thirty percent of City of Plymouth homes predate 1940, in Census Bureau figures for 2020 through 2024. Those houses have deep porches, steep front gables and dormers that break the roof into short pieces.

Out in the township, half the homes are newer than 1977, and the 1970s produced more of them than any other decade. Two very different rooflines, one service that covers both.

How we handle it in Plymouth

  • We provide every light on the job.
  • Porch roofs, gables and dormers on the older city houses planned before anyone climbs.
  • Long, plain eaves on township colonials hung in straight runs.
  • Installs booked in the fall, ahead of snow and ice.
  • All of it comes down in January.

Questions

Christmas lights questions from Plymouth homeowners

Does Christmas light installation in Plymouth cover the township as well as the city?

Yes, both. The city and the township are two separate governments, and we work in each. The houses differ more than the addresses do: older, more detailed rooflines in the city and longer, simpler ones in the township. Say which side you're on in your request.

Can Christmas light installation work on an older Plymouth porch house?

Yes. Porches, dormers and steep gables just mean more planning. We look at where each run starts and ends, where the ladder can stand safely and what you want lit, and we quote the house as it is. Older houses near downtown are some of the prettiest to light.

How far ahead do Plymouth homeowners need to schedule Christmas lights?

Book in the fall. September and October give you the widest choice of install dates, and the lights go up before snow and ice make roof work unsafe. For a house lit by the downtown parade and tree lighting on November 27, 2026, earlier is better.

Is takedown included with Christmas light installation in Plymouth?

Yes. The January takedown is built into the service. You don't need to book it separately or remember to call. We take the lights off your house after the holidays, so you aren't on a ladder in the coldest month of the year.

Who provides the lights for Christmas light installation in Plymouth?

We do. Glass Guru provides the lights for every install, so there's nothing for you to buy or test. Point out the rooflines, pick a color, and we'll bring what your house needs. Browse our gallery if you want to show us a look.

The detail

Christmas lights in Plymouth, explained

Downtown Plymouth in November and December

The Plymouth Downtown Development Authority runs Santa's City of Plymouth Parade and Tree Lighting on November 27, 2026, with the parade ending at Kellogg Park and the tree lit at 8:15 p.m. The Walk of Trees stays up in Kellogg Park through December, and the Plymouth Ice Festival fills the same park at the end of January. If you live within walking distance, your street sees a lot of foot traffic all season.

What the service covers

Our part is the lights, the hanging and the January takedown. That's the whole job. You choose which rooflines get lit and the look, from warm white to a full color mix.

City or township, the quote follows the roof

Plymouth's two halves need different plans. Inside city limits, half the houses predate 1961, and the older blocks pack more corners into every few feet of eave. Township rooflines run longer and plainer. We price each house by what's on it, so a small city house with a wraparound porch can take as long as a bigger township colonial.

Book before the snow

Plan on calling in September or October. The first fall freeze at Detroit Metro averages mid to late October, and by then frost on a north-facing roof can hang on into the afternoon. Once you're on the calendar, your lights go up on a dry day.
