When to book

Your trees set the date

Maples drop first on this side of the state. Oaks and beeches hold out, and many of them keep dead leaves on the branch right through winter. The habit has a name, marcescence: the layer that normally cuts a leaf loose in autumn doesn't let go until the buds break in spring.

That one fact decides the schedule here. On a lot with mature oaks, a single October cleaning is a scheduling problem. We clear the maple drop, the oaks keep going into November, the gutter fills again before the first freeze, and what's left is still coming down in March. So either the visit moves to late November, or it becomes two visits. The quote will say which, so January doesn't surprise you.

That's why the old streets around Northville, Plymouth and the older parts of Livonia get a different recommendation from the newer subdivisions in Canton, Novi and Farmington Hills, where the street trees were planted with the houses and the load is lighter. On the lakes in Commerce Township and West Bloomfield the problem changes again: shaded shoreline lots hold moisture, so what comes out is packed and heavy.

Town by town: the trees and the roofs

NorthvilleOak leaves still coming down in late November, and shallow eaves that ice up.
NoviDownspouts piped underground, and steep roofs with deep valleys.
PlymouthStreet trees over Old Village, narrow lots, half-round gutters.
CantonOverflow above the garage, and buried downspouts in flat clay lots.
LivoniaBig street trees over low ranch roofs, and ice at the eaves.
Commerce TownshipLakeside oaks and steep walkout lots with nowhere level for a ladder.
West BloomfieldRooflines at several heights, and oaks and hickories on big lots.
Farmington HillsOriginal 1970s gutters on old fascia, and heavy trees by Heritage Park.
Bloomfield HillsTall trees at the eaves, and back gutters nobody sees from the road.
BirminghamOne street tree over several roofs, and downspouts in narrow side yards.

Gutters and the roofline job after them

Gutters can go on the same booking as other work. If you're also thinking about Christmas lights, that's the same roofline and the same ladder, and the two jobs sit next to each other on the calendar for a reason. The method and what goes into the price are on the gutter cleaning page.

Grouped by the trees over the roof

Late November, or two visits

Mature oak lots

Old trees over the roof, many of them oaks. An October visit clears the maple drop, and the gutter fills again before the freeze. The quote says whether it's one late visit or two.

One visit, late in the season

Younger subdivision canopy

Subdivisions where the street trees went in with the houses. A lighter load and a later start, and one late visit can be enough.

Wet, packed debris

Lake lots and shaded elevations

Shoreline lots hold moisture and shade. What comes out of these gutters is packed and heavy, and the north sides never fully dry out.

Late fall, after the drop

Big trees over small lots and big ones

Birmingham's street trees reach over several close-set roofs at once, and Bloomfield Hills houses sit among trees on lots of an acre or more. The fall visit waits for the last leaves.

How your quote is worked out

Gutter cleaning is quoted per property, from the total linear footage, the number of downspouts, the height of the house and how complex the roofline is.

How long it takes

The time a gutter cleaning takes is set by the linear footage, the downspout count, the house height and the roofline complexity. The square footage of the house matters less. Two-story homes take longer, depending on how often the ladder has to move.
