Canton sits on flat clay, so gutter cleaning here includes checking where each downspout lets out. We clear by hand, run water down every downspout and follow it to where it ends up. The old street trees in Cherry Hill Village fill gutters faster than the young ones off Canton Center.

What Canton does to your gutters

  • Overloaded gutters above garages and entries

Roofs built after 1990 send several valleys into a few short sections of gutter, and the one over a forward garage takes the most. It packs long before the rest looks bad, and the overflow lands on concrete you use every day.

  • Buried downspouts and flat clay lots

Canton subdivisions often send downspouts underground, and the township is flat with heavy clay. A silted line backs water into the gutter with no sign at the top, and when the water does reach the ground, it sits on top of the clay.

  • Cherry Hill Village porches and street trees

Cherry Hill Village was built between 2000 and 2005 as a neo-traditional neighborhood with front porches, planted street trees and detailed roofs. The porch roofs have their own short gutters that are easy to forget, and the street trees are now big enough to matter in the fall.

How your quote is worked out

Gutter cleaning is quoted per property, from the total linear footage, the number of downspouts, the height of the house and how complex the roofline is.

How long it takes

The time a gutter cleaning takes is set by the linear footage, the downspout count, the house height and the roofline complexity. The square footage of the house matters less. Two-story homes take longer, depending on how often the ladder has to move.

Why it happens in Canton

Canton gutters overflow right over the garage

It comes down to where the roof valleys point. Canton's subdivisions are nearly all built after 1990, with complicated roofs: several gables, deep valleys, and a garage pushed forward with its own roof. Every valley funnels debris into a short stretch of gutter, and one of those stretches is usually right above the garage door. When it packs, the overflow lands on the driveway in front of the garage. In summer that's a nuisance. From December through March it freezes into a sheet right where you park and walk, and refreezes every night. Canton is also flat with heavy clay, so the water sits once it's on the concrete. A well-timed fall cleaning prevents it.

How we handle it in Canton

  • Hand cleaning on every run, with extra attention on the short, overloaded sections above garages and entries.
  • Downspouts flushed and checked at the outlet, including buried drain lines, which are standard in Canton's newer homes and fail without warning.
  • Roof valleys cleared where debris packs and washes straight back into the gutter after the next rain.
  • Several houses on one street can be done the same day, which Canton's layout makes easy.
  • Debris bagged and hauled off, with the drive and beds left clean.

“We have used them several times now for windows and gutter cleaning and will continue with them.”

Questions

Gutter cleaning questions from Canton homeowners

How much does gutter cleaning cost in Canton?

Canton's two-story homes with forward garages are priced on gutter length, height, roof pitch, debris and any guards that need to come off. If neighbors on your street want theirs done the same day, tell us and we'll quote them together. An address is all we need to start the quote.

Water pours over my gutter right above the garage. Why there?

Two roof valleys usually empty into a short section of gutter at that spot, so it packs first and overflows first while the rest still looks clear. It's a common problem on Canton's newer roofs, and a well-timed cleaning takes care of it.

My downspout runs underground. Do you check that?

Yes. We flush from the top and watch for water at the outlet. Buried lines are standard in Canton's subdivisions, and they silt up quietly over ten or fifteen years, so a clean gutter with a blocked buried line still overflows.

How often should Canton gutters be cleaned?

Two visits a year suit most homes: spring for winter grit and seed pods, and late fall after the trees finish. Cherry Hill Village and the older streets with big trees get more leaves in the fall than the newer subdivisions on open lots.

Can you do several houses on my street at once?

Yes. Canton's subdivisions are large and the houses are similar, so a whole street can go on the same day. Get your neighbors together, send us all the addresses in one message, and we'll set the street up as one day.

Why does my gutter fill up with seeds in the spring?

Those are maple seeds, the winged ones. MSU Extension says red, silver and Norway maples produce them in the largest numbers, and that they land on roofs and gutters and can clog gutters and downspouts. They come down in late spring, which is why a spring cleaning matters on a maple street.

The detail

Gutter cleaning in Canton, explained

Same plans, same problem spots

Canton has more owner-occupied homes than anywhere we work except Livonia, and whole streets went up in the same two or three years from the same few plans. So the problems repeat. Once we've cleared one house on a street, we can usually tell which section of the next one will be packed.

Checking the buried downspout line

If your downspout goes into the ground, the buried line is the part that fails first and the part nobody checks. It silts up, roots find it, and after ten years or so it stops draining. From the top, everything looks normal. We flush from the gutter and watch for water at the outlet, so if the line is blocked, you hear it from us before a flooded window well tells you in March.

Timing the fall cleaning in Canton

The fall cleaning has to come after the oaks are done and before the first hard freeze that lasts. In a typical year that's a short window, and it's what keeps meltwater from pooling at the eave and refreezing. On a Canton house, getting it wrong means an ice sheet over the garage apron and the front walk, every night from the first thaw until spring. Book the last visit for November and you'll see far less of it.

Canton, the ash borer and the parks

Canton has a place in the story of the emerald ash borer. A 2014 tree-ring study traced the earliest ash trees the beetle killed to 1997 in Canton Township, five years before it was identified near Detroit in 2002. MSU says it has since killed tens of millions of ash trees across southeast Michigan.

The township joined Tree City USA in 2026, recognized for its tree work in 2025, and its park pages list woodland at Heritage, Independence, Preservation, Freedom and several other parks. Homes along those parks take more leaves than a street of young trees.

Where the water goes matters too. Canton's storm drains and roadside ditches empty into the Lower and Middle Rouge rivers, so a gutter that overflows onto the driveway sends grit and leaves toward the river along with the water.

Doing a Canton street in one day

Canton's size makes it easy to do a whole street in one day. If several neighbors want their gutters done, send us the addresses together. If the windows need doing too, the north wall has turned green, or you want Christmas lights on the roofline, all of it wants the same fall weeks, and it's simpler to do in one trip.
