Each one is cleaned by hand, in the outside season. Lights inside the house belong to chandelier cleaning, which has a page of its own.
Exterior lights are outside work, done March to December. They go easily with a window cleaning or a house wash.

I was able to add on power washing services this time, and the price was very reasonable. The crew did an amazing job with the windows, too.

Dim entries
A dirty fixture makes an entry look dim
An outdoor light is a bulb with glass around it, left out in the weather. Anything that settles on that glass, or falls inside it, sits between the bulb and the step it's meant to light. Dust and dead insects inside a fixture's glass block light.
Insects come to a lit fixture after dark. The ones that find a gap get inside the glass and stay there, and spiders build webs across the frame to catch the rest. Over the warm months the lights by a door, along a drive and under the eaves fill with bugs and cobwebs.
The photo at the top of this page is one coach light before and after: the same glass, hazed over and then clear.

- They go easily with a window cleaning or a house wash, since we're already at the house.
“They will clean tall mirrors, outside lights, gutters, chandeliers, you name it!”
Questions
Common exterior light cleaning questions in Northville, MI
What does exterior light cleaning include?
Exterior light cleaning covers the lights on the outside of a home: coach lights beside the front and garage doors, post lamps along a walk or a drive, and soffit lights under the eaves. Every light is cleaned by hand.
How much does exterior light cleaning cost?
The lights set the price: the number on your list and where each one is. A soffit light high under the eaves takes longer to reach than a coach light by the door. Send a photo of each one to get a price.
Why do outdoor lights get so dirty?
Insects come to a lit fixture after dark, and the ones that get inside the glass stay there. Spiders build webs across the frame to catch the rest. Dust and dead insects inside the glass block light, so a dirty coach light makes the entry look dim.
Can you fix an outdoor light that doesn't work?
Wiring and repairs are an electrician's job. If we notice something wrong while we're cleaning, such as a cracked pane or a wire that looks damaged, we tell you what we saw so you can have an electrician look at it.
Do you clean lights inside the house?
Inside fixtures, such as a foyer chandelier, are part of chandelier cleaning, which has its own page. This page is for the lights outside.
When can I book exterior light cleaning?
Exterior lights are outside work, so they're done in the outside season, March to December. They go well with a window cleaning, which runs March to December, or a house wash, which runs March to November.
Are the lights cleaned on a house wash?
Yes. On a house wash, exterior light fixtures get rinsed and webbed out, and wasp and mud dauber nests come down from the eaves and the fixtures.
The detail
Exterior light cleaning, explained
Glass Guru does exterior light cleaning for homes in Northville, Novi, Plymouth, Livonia, Farmington Hills and the other towns we serve. It covers the lights on the outside of the house: the coach lights beside the doors, post lamps along a walk or a drive, and the soffit lights tucked under the eaves. The business is owner-operated and has worked out of Northville since 2014.
What exterior light cleaning covers
Exterior light cleaning covers the coach lights on either side of a front door or a garage door, post lamps along a walk or a drive, and the soffit lights set into the overhang of the roof. Each one is cleaned by hand.
Lights inside the house are a different job. A foyer chandelier is on the chandelier cleaning page.
What bugs do to an outdoor light
Moths and other insects gather at a lit fixture at night. Some find a gap, get inside the glass and die there, and spiders string webs across the frame to catch the rest. That's why an outdoor light fills up over a summer.
Dead insects pile up in the bottom of the glass, and webs stretch across the panes. Dust and dead insects inside a fixture block light, and an entry lit by a dirty coach light looks dim.
The coach light at the top of this page
The before and after at the top of this page are one coach light on a brick wall, photographed before Glass Guru cleaned it and after. In the first photo the glass has gone hazy and the inside of the lantern is hard to make out. In the second the panes are clear and you can see straight through them.
The two photos were taken from slightly different spots, so the after has been lined up on the before. Nothing in either picture has been painted over or retouched.
What can go in water and what stays dry
Glass panels and globes that are made to come off can be washed in water. The wired parts, such as the socket and the plate against the wall, stay dry.
Wiring and repairs are an electrician's job. If we see a cracked pane or a wire that doesn't look right while we're working, we tell you what we saw, so you can have an electrician take a look.
Exterior lights on a house wash
On a house wash, exterior light fixtures get rinsed and webbed out, and mud dauber and wasp nests get knocked down from the eaves and the fixtures. If the siding is due for a wash anyway, the lights get rinsed and webbed out along with it.
When to book exterior light cleaning
Exterior lights are outside work, so they follow the outside calendar: March to December.
Pairing them with a visit that already has us at the house keeps it simple: a window cleaning between March and December, or a house wash between March and November.
Exterior lights at a business
For a storefront or an office, see commercial window cleaning. That page covers how business visits run.
How exterior light cleaning is priced
Exterior light cleaning is priced from the lights you list. The count matters, and so does where they are: a soffit light high under the eaves takes longer to reach than a coach light by the door.
Send a photo of each light and say where it hangs. That's what we price it from.
