The visit
How gutter cleaning works
Gutter cleaning, as Glass Guru Window Cleaning does it, is hand clearing of every trough, a pressurized flush of every downspout confirmed running clear at the outflow, and the debris bagged and hauled off your property. Clearing by hand, with no blower, is what keeps the debris out of your beds and off your windows.
The fall visit goes after the oaks drop and before the first hard freeze. Here's what happens on it.
Every downspout is flushed with water and checked at the outflow, because a clean trough above a plugged downspout is still a broken gutter.
When we come
Most homes in Metro Detroit need gutter cleaning twice a year, in late spring and late fall.
- Late spring: May to June
- Late fall, after the oaks: November
| When | What we do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| May | Clear out the seeds and tassels | Maple helicopters come down in huge numbers with the oak tassels, pack into the gutter, hold water and start to sprout. |
| Early November | The fall cleanout, under maples | Maples here drop their leaves through October. |
| Second half of November | The fall cleanout, under oaks | Oaks hang on into November, and the visit has to come before the first hard freeze. |

Clear it by hand
We empty every gutter by hand and bag the debris, so none of it lands in your beds or on your windows.
- Hand removal of debris from every gutter run
- Gutter guards lifted, cleaned underneath and reset where they are removable
- Roof debris above the gutter line pulled off so it does not wash straight back in
02
Flush every downspout
We run water down each downspout and watch the bottom. If it doesn't run clear, we snake it before we leave.
- Every downspout flushed and confirmed running clear at the outflow
- Blocked downspouts cleared with a snake before we call the job done
- Splash blocks and downspout extensions repositioned if they have drifted
03
Haul it away
We take the debris with us and pick up anything that fell on the walks, the beds or the driveway.
- Debris bagged and removed from the property
- Ground-level cleanup of anything that fell during the work
04
Tell you what we found
While we're up there, we check the fascia, the hangers and the slope, and we tell you what we find.
- Fascia checked for rot, staining and overflow marks
- Hangers and spikes checked, obvious loose ones tightened
- Pitch checked for standing water in the trough

How your quote is worked out
Gutter cleaning is quoted per property, from the total linear footage, the number of downspouts, the height of the house and how complex the roofline is.
How long it takes
The time a gutter cleaning takes is set by the linear footage, the downspout count, the house height and the roofline complexity. The square footage of the house matters less. Two-story homes take longer, depending on how often the ladder has to move.

When to book
Book the fall gutter cleaning after the oaks drop
Maples here drop their leaves through October. Oaks hang on into November, and some keep going past Thanksgiving. A cleaning in early October gets the maple leaves, and then the oaks fill the gutters again.
On the other side is the first hard freeze. Water sitting in a clogged gutter freezes, the weight pulls on the hangers, and a frozen downspout can't be cleared until spring. A blocked gutter also makes ice dams worse.
So the fall visit fits between the two: after the oaks are done and before the ground freezes. Around here that's usually the second half of November.
One visit, timed to the trees
- If oaks hang over your roof, we'll tell you whether one fall visit will cover it or you need two.
- We schedule the fall visit for after the leaves are down.

Questions
Common gutter cleaning questions in Metro Detroit
How often should gutters be cleaned in Michigan?
Twice a year for most homes: late spring and late fall. Homes with big maples or oaks over the roof often need three visits, because one large tree can fill a gutter on its own. The spring visit is for maple seeds and oak tassels, and it's the one people skip.
When is the best time for fall gutter cleaning in Michigan?
After the oaks finish dropping and before the first hard freeze, which around here is usually the second half of November. An early October cleaning misses the oak leaves, and the gutters fill again within a few weeks. If your trees are mostly maples, early November works. Late November dates book first.
Do clean gutters prevent ice dams?
No. Ice dams start when heat escapes into the attic, melts snow on the upper roof, and the water refreezes at the cold edge. Insulation and ventilation fix that. A clogged gutter makes a dam worse, because packed wet leaves freeze into a block at the edge and frozen downspouts leave the water nowhere to go.
Do you flush the downspouts?
Yes, every downspout on every visit. We run water down each one and watch the bottom to make sure it flows. If it doesn't, we snake it. Leaves pack into the first elbow, so a gutter can look clean from a ladder with the downspout still blocked. If you have underground drain lines, we check the far end too.
What do you do with the debris?
We bag it and take it with us. We clear gutters by hand, which keeps wet leaves off your beds, your patio furniture and your windows. Anything that falls while we work gets picked up off the walks, the beds and the driveway.
Are gutter guards worth it?
They cut down how often you need a cleaning, but you'll still need one. Fine debris and shingle grit get through, and pine needles and maple seeds slide through mesh that stops a leaf. Under heavy trees, guards can mat over and send water over the front edge. Think of them as going from three cleanings a year to one.
Can you clean gutters with guards installed?
Yes. We lift removable guards, clean underneath and put them back, which takes longer and adds to the price. Some sealed or screwed-down guards can't come off without damage or voiding their warranty. If you have those, we'll tell you, clean what we can reach and flush the downspouts.
What are the signs my gutters are clogged?
Water spilling over the front edge in the rain, a waterfall off one corner, dark streaks on the fascia below the gutter, plants growing out of it, or mulch washed out of the bed below. Inside, a damp corner in the basement after heavy rain often traces back to one overflowing section right above it.
Do you clean two-story homes?
Yes. On a two-story home the price depends on how often the ladder has to move, how complicated the roofline is and how steep the roof is, along with the length of the gutters. A colonial with dormers and valleys takes longer than a simple gable roof of the same size. If a roof isn't safe to work on, we'll say so.
How much does gutter cleaning cost?
The price is based on the total length of the gutters, the number of downspouts, the height of the house and how complicated the roofline is. Send us the address and a rough idea of the house, and we'll quote it. If you're also booking window cleaning, we do the gutters first.
Do I need to be home?
No. We just need the gate open and an outdoor spigot for flushing the downspouts. If the gate is locked, send us the code. Afterward we'll tell you what we found on the fascia, the hangers and the slope, including anything to fix before winter.
The detail
Gutter cleaning, explained
Glass Guru cleans gutters in Northville, Novi, Plymouth, Canton, Livonia, Commerce Township, West Bloomfield and Farmington Hills. We clear them by hand, run water down every downspout and take the debris with us. It's plain work that protects your roof edge and your basement.
How often gutters need cleaning in Michigan
Plan on two visits a year, one in late spring and one in late fall. Homes with big maples or oaks right overhead may need a third, since one tree over the roof can fill a gutter by itself. Newer subdivisions with young trees can sometimes manage with just the fall visit.
The spring visit is the one people skip. It's for the seeds: maple helicopters come down in huge numbers in May, along with oak tassels and pollen. They pack into the gutter, hold water and start to sprout. Maple seedlings growing out of a gutter mean spring has been skipped for a few years.
Timing the fall cleaning
The best window is after the oaks finish and before the first hard freeze, usually the second half of November around here. Book in early October and the oaks will fill the gutters again within three weeks.
That window is short, which is why late-November dates book first. With mostly maples you have more room, and early November is fine. With oaks over the house, it's worth waiting. If you're having Christmas lights installed too, this is the visit to pair with it, since both jobs happen on the roofline in the same few weeks.
Clean gutters and ice dams
Clean gutters don't prevent ice dams. Ice dams come from heat escaping into the attic, melting snow on the upper roof, and the meltwater refreezing at the cold edge. The fix for that is attic insulation and ventilation.
What a clogged gutter does is make a dam worse. Wet leaves packed in the gutter freeze into a block at the edge, which gives the ice something to build on and holds meltwater against the roof. Frozen downspouts take away the water's last way out. So a November cleaning won't stop ice dams, and it does remove one of the things that makes them bad. If you get dams every winter, spend the money on an insulation and ventilation check first.
Weight is the other risk. Wet debris and ice can put more load on the hangers than they were built for. Gutters that pull away from the fascia in February usually started as gutters nobody cleared in November.
Then there's freeze-thaw. Southeast Michigan goes through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles between November and March. Water gets into a crack, freezes, expands about nine percent and widens the crack a little each time. It's the same thing that causes potholes, and it works on caulk, mortar and window seals too. A gutter full of wet debris keeps water sitting right where that damage starts.
Why downspouts matter more than the gutters
The gutter is the part you see, and the downspout is the part that fails. Debris works its way to the outlet, packs into the first elbow and sets. From the ground, or even a ladder, the gutter can look clear while the water has nowhere to go.
We run water down every downspout and watch the bottom. If it doesn't run clear, we snake it before we call the job done. If your downspouts drain into underground lines to the yard or the street, we check that the far end is flowing, because a crushed or root-filled line backs water up into the downspout just like a clog.
This matters more in Michigan because of basements. Most homes here have a full basement, and an overflowing gutter dumps water straight down against the foundation. That's where seepage in the corner of a finished basement usually starts, and it costs far more to fix than the gutter cleaning that would have prevented it.
Gutter guards
Gutter guards get oversold. Good ones cut down how often you need a cleaning, and none of them make it unnecessary. Fine debris and shingle grit still get in, and on many designs the leaves that can't get in mat on top and block the flow.
Pine needles and maple seeds are the problem here, because they slide straight through mesh that stops a leaf. Under heavy oak or maple cover, guards can turn a clogged gutter into a matted roof edge that sends water over the front.
We clean under removable guards and put them back. Some sealed systems can't come off without damage, and if yours is one of them, we'll say so. If you're thinking about guards, expect them to take you from three cleanings a year to one.
How gutter cleaning is priced across Metro Detroit
Gutter cleaning is priced on the total length of the gutters, the number of downspouts, the height of the house and how complicated the roofline is. A one-story ranch with a simple roof goes quickly. A two-story colonial with dormers, valleys and a steep pitch means moving the ladder many times, and it takes much longer.
If you're booking window cleaning too, we do the gutters first, since clearing a gutter can drop grit down the glass.
Gutter brightening is a separate job
The dark vertical stripes on the face of aluminum gutters, sometimes called tiger stripes, are oxidation and road film bonded to the finish. Cleaning out the gutter doesn't touch them, and neither does a regular house wash. They need a brightening treatment worked into the face by hand.
It's cosmetic, and on a house with white or light-colored gutters it makes one of the biggest visible differences for the money. We do it as an add-on to pressure washing and soft washing, priced by the foot.
